In the Objectivist Ethics it is wrong to initiate force or fraud against others. You can of course try and defend yourself against immediate use of force by a criminal. But what about retaliation if force or fraud is used against you?

The purpose of government is to remove the retaliatory use of force as much as possible from the realm of the irrational.

Since government has a monopoly on the use of force, it is crucial that this monopoly be used to dispense justice.

This means we need a government of laws and not of men. The laws of a proper society are objective in regard to their validation and interpretation.

Government established with Objectivist principles would be responsible for police, courts and national defense i.e. only those agencies responsible for the rational retaliatory use of force.
