There is a natural hierarchy for concepts that you need to be aware of. Low on the hierarchy are immediate concepts very closely support by direct sense data. As you go to higher levels of abstraction from concept to concept you go up in this hierarchy.

Ayn Rand advises that you need to be able to go backwards down the abstraction hierarchy a process called "reduction" to find the source in sense data for any idea.
